This Autumn we've repaired 54m of heritage stone faced banks. The Devonshire method of stone faced banks was traditionally used to protect hedges and gateways from livestock eroding them. The Basal layers are layed flat, then the upper layers are layed upright with keystones being buried deep into the earth as anchors. The bank then leans backwards to allow for when the bank swells due to rainfall, this is called "batter". My father Dennis last repaire these walls 37 years ago... this time round, aged 85 I was happy with dad observing!
